Abstract
The existence of enzymes which catalyze the direct transfer of hydrogen between TPNH and DPN was adumbrated by Ball 2 in 1941. 11 years later, Kaplan, Colowick and their collaborators1, 2 discovered such an enzyme in Pseudomonas fluorescens which they designated pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase. Enzymes of this class have since been found in some animal3–9 and plant10 tissues, and in various micro-organisms1, 11. The pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenases of Pseudomonas fluorescens 1 and of spinach10 are soluble enzymes, while the animal transhydrogenases appear to be confined to the mitochondria and microsomes4, 5, 8, 9. The highest levels of transhydrogenase in animal tissues are located in the mitochondria of heart, kidney and liver4, 8.
