Abstract
A substantial literature exists on the fine structure of ciliates, especially with respect to the taxonomic significance of the surface cortex and subcortical structures, and structural-functional correlates of subcellular organelles. Some of the finer details, especially with respect to the taxonomic significance of comparative fine structure, have been reviewed by Small and Lynn (1985). A comparative survey of some major features of representative organisms is presented here with the aim of summarizing current knowledge and establishing a broad context for the physiological and functional topics discussed in succeeding chapters.
