Fine Structure of Amoebae and Their Relatives

  • O. Roger Anderson

Comparative views of the cytoplasm of a naked amoeba, planktonic foraminife-ran, radiolarian, and heliozoan are presented in Figures 13.1 and 13.2. Some general descriptions of these four representative cells will be presented before proceeding to more detailed comparative analyses of the various taxonomic groups. The diversity of protozoa within the Sarcodina and related groups, and the broad comparative focus of the chapter necessitate a generalized description of fine structure rather than an intensive analysis of individual species. For purposes of clarity, however, reference to interspecies differences will be made to illustrate general principles of microanatomy and correlated function among the “amoeboid” organisms.
