Abstract

Tumor cells or tissue can be selectively irradiated in the following fashion. First a nontoxic compound containing 10B is localized in the neoplastic tissue. The 10B itself is not radioactive. Then the area is irradiated with slow neutrons, which themselves do not harm tissue. The nuclear reaction 10B (n, α)7Li takes place, releasing highly energetic particles within the tumor cell or tissue. This method is called 10B neutron capture therapy.
