Ventricular Shunt Functioning Despite Extraventricular Location of the Catheter Tip as Revealed by Computed Tomography

Abstract

Hydrocephalic infants with a ventricular shunt have only rarely been reported to have become independent of the shunt. The location of the catheter tip outside the cerebrospinal fluid space, as shown by computed tomography (CT), however, without intracranial hypertension and progressive ventriculomegaly, has empirically suggested arrested hydrocephalus or shunt independence. Additionally the malfunction of ventriculoperitoneal shunt with an extraventricular catheter tip (demonstrated by CT) has usually indicated an obstruction at the proximal end.
