Abstract
During the years 1971–1986, 488 shunting procedures were carried out for 311 hydrocephalic patients (238 procedures for 167 adults and 250 for 144 children). The rates and the causes of revision were reviewed in 177 procedures (163 V-P and 14 V-A) to revise malfunctioning shunts in 101 patients. Shunt revision of one or more occasions was required in 29.8% (71/238 procedures) of adults and 42.4% (106/250 procedures) of children. The average number of operations per patients was 1.4 in adults and 1.7 in children.
