Abstract

A fair number of persons suffering from tuberculous meningitis develop hydrocephalus and raised intracranial pressure due to impairment of CSF circulation as a result of formation of thick basal exudate. Intrathecal hyaluronidase was used in a preliminary study of nine cases with the hope that it would dissolve the exudate, reestablish CSF circulation and potentiate the action of antituberculous drugs. This was followed by a randomised trial in which five cases were treated with intrathecal hyaluronidase while six were treated with ventriculo peritoneal shunt insertion.
