Abstract

The homing of pigeons is a complicated process that depends upon many parameters. The measurement of vanishing bearings instead of the entire flight tracks reduces the obtained information from more than 10 kbit to only 8 bit. Therefore, the entire initial flight tracks should be measured. An apparatus has been assembled for such measurements. It consists of telescopes that are coupled to electronic digitizers. The positions of the pigeons are stored (max. 10 measurements/s) and processed on line with a HP 9815A calculator.

Possible sources of error and some preliminary measurements are discussed.
