Abstract
The genealogy of the Werner family can be traced back as far as the sixteenth century. The family coat of arms (Familienwappen) (See cover) bears the date 1595. The oldest progenitor known with certainty is Hans Werner dit Bötz, apastor at Eschbach/Baden, Germany, who died in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) in the province of Alsace in 1612. During succeeding years, members of the family resided in various places, but they never strayed far from the fertile and picturesque plain of the Rhine, which forms a natural boundary between France and Germany.
