Zusammenfassung
Neben der Behandlung der opportunistischen Infektionen und Tumoren sowie der Anwendung prophylaktischer Maßnahmen stellt die gegen das HIV gerichtete antiretrovirale Therapie heute bereits einen festen Bestandteil der Behandlungsstrategie bei HIV-infizierten Patienten dar. Ziel dieser Therapie ist die Hemmung der Replikation von HIV. Dadurch soll die weitere Virusausbreitung und die Infektion bisher noch nicht infizierter Zellen im Wirtsorganismus verhindert werden. Klinisch erhofft man sich durch die antiretrovirale Therapie eine Verbesserung der Immunitätslage des Patienten, eine Verbesserung seines klinischen Zustandes, die Verhinderung des Übergangs zu AIDS und die Verlängerung der Überlebenszeit. Ein weiteres, bisher nicht realisierbares Ziel ist die Verminderung der Infektiosität durch Verminderung der Virusausscheidung.
