Wirtschaftsinformatik ist die Wissenschaft von Entwurf, Entwicklung und Einsatz computergestützter betriebswirtschaftlicher Informationssysteme. In diesem Buch werden vorrangig Informationssysteme für Industriebetriebe behandelt. Der Titel „Wirtschaftsinformatik“ erscheint trotzdem gerechtfertigt, da die hohe Komplexität von Industriebetrieben traditionell im Zentrum der Betriebswirtschaftslehre steht und industrielle Lösungen häufig Schrittmacher für andere Branchenanwendungen sind.
