Zusammenfassung

Schizophrene Psychosen gehören zu den schwersten psychiatrischen Erkrankungen. Begründer des modernen, heute noch gültigen psychiatrischen Krankheitskonzeptes war der deutsche Psychiater Emil Kraepelin, der den Begriff “Dementia praecox” 1896 einführte und den Namen wegen des (angeblich) irreversiblen intellektuellen Verfalls und des frühen Erkrankungsalters wählte (Kraepelin, 1904). Er ging davon aus, daß es sich um eine rein körperliche Erkrankung handele, deren Ursache aber noch nicht bekannt sei und wählte deshalb auch die Bezeichnung endogene Psychose. Der Begriff „Schizophrenie“ wurde 1911 von Bleuler geprägt. Er wählte die Bezeichnung, weil die wesentliche Störung seines Erachtens in einer Spaltung des Bewußtseins und der Gesamtpersönlichkeit lag (griechisch: schizo = ich spalte, phren = Geist).
