Valve Replacement in Infancy and Childhood

Abstract

The basic philosophy of valve replacement in the pediatric age group has not changed over the past years: preservation of autologous tissue valves within the confines/constraints of appropriate retained hemodynamic function of the native valve. Although several valve models and types have surfaced in the past five years, it has now become clear and generally accepted that tissue heart valves are currently inappropriate in the pediatric age group. This limitation of the biologic valve in the younger age group stems primarily from the lack of durability and hence longevity of the valve, irrespective of its anatomical position.
