Organismen, Ökosysteme und die verschiedenen vom Menschen geschaffenen (anthropogenen) Systeme sind alles offene Systeme, die im Austausch (von Energie, Materie und Information) mit ihrer Umwelt stehen. Sie sind deshalb von Entwicklungen in ihrer Umwelt abhängig, die sie oft kaum selbst beeinflussen können.
