Fiber Raman Lasers

Abstract

By means of the stimulated Raman effect, laser-pumped optical fibers yield both cw and pulsed laser action from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared (from 0.3 to beyond 2 μm). A single Stokes order yields continuous tuning over several hundred cm −1, and many Stokes orders are often produced from a single pump frequency. The basic principles and the performance of these efficient frequency down-converters are given, and the influence of fiber properties on performance is discussed.
