Die erkrankte Speiseröhre reagiert mit verschiedenen Symptomen: Sodbrennen (ein meist postprandial auftretender brennender Schmerz zwischen Epigastrium und Rachen), Odynophagie (die schmerzhafte Passage eines Bissens), krampfartige Schmerzen (häufig in den Rücken ausstrahlend) und Dysphagie (das Gefühl des Steckenbleibens der Nahrung).
