Zusammenfassung
Die Grenze zwischen Mundhöhle und Rachen verläuft am Übergang vom harten zum weichen Gaumen, entlang der vorderen Tonsillarfalte, und biegt dann um auf die Linea terminalis zwischen Zungenkörper und Zungengrund, die durch die Papillae circumvallatae und das Foramen caecum gebildet wird. Die Vorderseite des weichen Gaumens bildet das Dach des Oropharynx, die Hinterseite den Boden des Nasopharynx. Der Zungengrund bildet die Vorderwand des Oropharynx. Atem- und Speiseweg verlaufen im Oropharynx gemeinsam; eine Verlegung des Oropharynx führt zu Atemnot und Schluckstörungen.
