Abstract

There is a growing incidence of human disease due to opportunistic fungal infections. The population of immunocompromised, neutropenic, or critically ill patients at risk for invasive mycoses is a consequence of increasingly successful, but complex therapies employed by modern medicine. The major opportunistic fungal pathogens responsible for these infections include Candida species, Aspergillus species and other opportunistic molds, and Cryptococcus neoformans. Standard clinical examination, diagnostic imaging methods, and conventional microbiological methods are of limited utility in timely diagnosis of invasive mycoses. For cryptococcosis, sensitive and specific antigen detection tests are routinely used to diagnose this infection. In contrast, the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis and aspergillosis remains problematic. Consequently, substantial efforts have been undertaken to investigate novel methods for the diagnosis of these opportunistic mycoses.
