Abstract

Species of Aspergillus are ubiquitous saprobes in nature, but some have been implicated in a wide spectrum of human diseases ranging from asthma in atopic individuals to invasive systemic aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients (Kurup and Apter 1998). Various species have frequently been isolated from freshly dug fields, compost piles, potting soil, mulches, sewage facilities, and bird excreta (Kramer et al. 1989; Kurup and Kumar 1991; Fink and Kurup 1997; Kurup and Banerjee 1997; Summerbell 1998). Although the genus Aspergillus contains over 130 species, only a few have been shown to be associated with human diseases (Summerbell 1998). Among them, Aspergillus fumigatus (Fig. 12.1A) is the most common fungus associated with various types of diseases in humans. A. fumigatus grows at temperatures ranging from 15–53 °C. The conidia of A. fumigatus are produced in specialized stalks and range from 1–3 mm in diameter (Fig. 12.1B).
