Gene Regulation in Mycelial Fungi

Part of the book series: The Mycota ((MYCOTA,volume 2))

Abstract

During recent years, gene regulation in mycelial or filamentous fungi has been a fast-growing topic, not only because of biotechnical interest but also because of the study of evolutionary events and the use of fungi as model systems to investigate biological phenomena in eukaryotes. In contrast to yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, not much is known about the regulation of gene expression in other fungi (see Chap. 9, this Vol.). The reason for this was the relatively late development of fungal transformation systems, which is a basic method for genetic investigation (see Chap. 8, this Vol.). Only in the late 1970s was transformation recorded for Neurospora crassa (Case et al. 1979). Nowadays many transformation methods are available for a range of different fungi (for review see Fincham 1989 and Chap. 8, this Vol.).
