Abstract
The short, fixed terms that are used in the anatomical and physiological literature are maintained without any changes in the description of the different parts of the lung, the air sacs and the septa. This is valid for the designation of the bronchi too. The “primary bronchus” of current English authors (King, 1956; Salt and Zeuthen, 1960, and other authors) is termed mesobronchium in its whole length by Huxley (1882), accordingly mesobronchus by some other authors (Scheid and Piiper, 1970, and other authors). The primary bronchus is marked by a more or less distinct dilatation between the two branching groups of secondary bronchi, the vestibulum. In front of the vestibulum the “ventrobronchi” (Brandes, 1924) originate, the bronches diaphragmatiques of Sappey (1847), entobronchi (Gadow, 1891, and other authors) or mesiobronchi (Delphia, 1961). They are fixed by their names in the given position within the lung. The same is true for the “dorsobronchi”(Brandes, 1924) which are situated on the dorsolateral surface of the lung. Sappey (1847) named them bronches costales, Gadow (1891) and others ectobronchi. In both groups of these secondary bronchi the naming of the individual bronchi (Fischer, 1905) other than by number is omitted.
