Measuring Sustainability — Index of Balanced Sustainable Development

  • Chapter
Technological Choices for Sustainability

Abstract

The need for aggregated sustainability information has become a concrete goal of nations committed to contributing to sustainable development and to the establishment of an integrated economic, environmental and social information system for the sustainability assessments.

The paper presents a method for aggregating a set of indicators into the Index of balanced sustainable development (I BSD). The method constructs the Index from economic, environmental and social sub-indices, equally weighted together to describe total impact on sustainable development of nations. Thus, large number of indicators are aggregated in order to compress information into the index and provide problem-oriented information for decision-making.

On the basis of the methodology, index of balanced sustainable development for 24 countries (EU and candidate countries) was calculated for 1990, 1995 and 1998.
