Zusammenfassung
Berührung ist unsere erste Sprache. Sie ist das erste funktionsfähige System im Uterus, über sie machen wir unsere ersten Erfahrungen in dieser Welt. Mit Hilfe von Berührungen werden wir ernährt und beruhigt; über Berührungen entstehen unsere ersten emotionalen Bindungen (Montagu 1978). Berührung ist sozusagen „das älteste und primitivste Ausdrucksmittel“ (Collier 1985, S. 29). Sie stellt eines der primären Systeme dar, die dem Menschen den Kontakt zur Außenwelt ermöglichen. Wir sind solange in hohem Maße von Berührungen abhängig, bis wir eine Sprache und motorische Fähigkeiten erlernt und bis sich kognitive Prozesse entwickelt haben, die uns dabei lenken, wenn wir Erfahrungen in der Umwelt sammeln und mit ihr interagieren (Collier 1985).
Berührungen bergen Risiken. Eine Berührung ist eine nonverbale Form der Kommunikation und kann deshalb von einem oder beiden beteiligten Partnern mißverstanden werden. Mit einer Berührung dringt ein Mensch in die Intimsphäre eines anderen Menschen ein, der diese Berührung als eine Bedrohung empfinden kann. Wenn wir mit uns selbst und der Person, die wir berühren, nicht im Einklang sind, kann eine Berührung unpassend sein. Allerdings kann ein Verzicht auf Berührungen ebenfalls verheerende Folgen haben, z. B. in Situationen, in denen Worte allein nicht genügen oder nicht angemessen verarbeitet werden können, weil das Individuum nicht zur Integration fähig ist.
