Abstract

In this chapter transformation systems are introduced as formal models of parts of software systems. The concrete understanding of the term part thereby depends on the desired granularity of the model, i.e., its degree of abstractness. Whether some portion of a system is considered as a part in this sense is not an objective property of the software system, but a design decision in the modelling process. A transformation system might be a model of an object, or a process as a part of the behaviour of an object, or a component in the sense of component-based software engineering (see e.g. [SP96, Gri98, Szy98, CD00)), or a whole software system. In the last case the transformation system will probably be constructed from smaller parts by appropriate composition operations, as discussed in Chapter 5.
