Schmerztherapie bei Kindern

Zusammenfassung

Noch vor 20 Jahren vertraten viele Ärzte die Meinung, junge Kinder empfänden keine Schmerzen, und ältere Kinder würden Schmerzen besser verarbeiten als Erwachsene. Aus diesem Mythos folgte logischerweise, dass Kindern bei extrem schmerzhaften Ereignissen wie Unfällen, Verbrennungen oder Operationen Analgetika vorenthalten oder in zu niedrigen Dosen verabreicht wurden [72]. In den 1980er Jahren war die nozizeptive Kompetenz von Kindern eine wissenschaftlich anerkannte Tatsache, und dennoch gehörte eine suffiziente Schmerztherapie an US-amerikanischen Kinderkliniken nicht zum Behandlungsstandard [49].
