Abstract
If the model of self-organized criticality (SOC) yields power law distributions [1–5], does it follow that the well-known power-law distribution of earthquake energies [6–8] imply that the earthquake process is SOC? I show below that the earth is not SOC and that there are alternatives to understand the power law.
