Die Zusammenfassung verschiedener Wirkstoffe unter diesem, von lat. stimulus = Stachel, Antrieb, Reiz, abgeleiteten Begriff stellt auf die charakteristische anregende und leistungssteigernde Wirkungskomponente dieser Gruppe von Rauschdrogen ab. Synonym wird der ältere, heute weniger gebräuchliche Begriff „Excitantia“ verwendet.
