Abstract
Pelagic and bottom (demersal) fish fauna are the most important links within the marine trophic ecosystem in Arctic and Sub-Arctic latitudes. Fish, on the one hand, concentrate energy from lower trophic levels and, on the other hand, serve as a food source for sea mammals and some birds. The fish population of the Barents Sea includes more than 150 species; about 20 of them are of marketable value. During the last decades the annual catches of Barents Sea fish have varied from 2 to 4 million tons (Matishov end Denisov 2000). During the period 1950–1970s the catches of Barents Sea cod reached 1.0–1.4 million tons annually.
