Zusammenfassung

Es werden die wesentlichen entwicklungsphysiologischen und -psychologischen Erkenntnisse zur Schmerzwahrnehmung bei Kindern dargelegt. Fünf Schmerzbereiche werden unterschieden: Schmerz infolge akuter Traumen sowie medizinisch-diagnostischer und therapeutischer Interventionen, krankheitsbezogene Schmerzprobleme und funktionelle Schmerzbeschwerden. Die verschiedenen Methoden der Erfassung von Schmerzerleben bzw. Schmerzverhalten von Kindern ab Geburt bis zum späteren Alter werden vorgestellt. Der Einsatz von therapeutischen Verfahren mit einem Schwergewicht auf psychosozialen Interventionen wird ausführlich beleuchtet, und zwar bei akuten Schmerzzuständen (z. B. nach Operationen) und bei rekurrierendem Schmerz, der krankheitsbedingt (z. B. bei Arthritis) oder funktionell (z. B. Kopfschmerz) sein kann.
