Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff „Hormon“ wurde erstmals durch Bayliss und Starling im Jahre 1902 verwendet, als sie die biologische Wirkung von Sekretin beschrieben. Das Peptid Sekretin hatten sie aus der Dünndarmmukosa extrahiert und nach intravenöser Verabreichung beobachtet, dass der Extrakt einen starken Anstieg der Pankreassekretion verursachte. Das erste Hormon war als ein Botenstoff aus dem Magen-Darm-Trakt; der Begriff wurde in der Folge für Substanzen verwendet, die als Botenstoffe von einer Zelle (einem Organ) produziert werden und via Blut ihre Wirkung an einem anderen Organ ausüben. Heute sind über 20 verschiedene endokrine Zelltypen im Magen-Darm-Trakt bekannt. Die meisten davon wurden erst in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten entdeckt. Gleichzeitig mit der Entdeckung dieser endokrinen Zelltypen wurde man auf eine Gruppe von seltenen Krankheiten aufmerksam, die mit einer hormonellen Dysfunktion dieser Zellen verknüpft ist: die hormonproduzierenden Tumoren des Magen-Darm-Traktes (Falkner et al. 1984).
