Abstract
When a blood vessel is cut or damaged, the blood in its vicinity tends to solidify. The principal events of this process, known as haemostasis, are: (1) the constriction of the damaged vessel, (2) the deposition of circulating platelets over the injured area and (3) the conversion of fluid blood into a gelatinous mass, or fibrin clot (Ganong 1979). The following introductory sections will outline the function and laboratory evaluation of the elements that are thought to govern haemostasis, that is, endothelial cells, vasomotion, platelets, coagulation and fibrinolysis. A simplified depiction of the main events involved in the haemostatic process is shown in Fig. 1.
