Zusammenfassung
Alter bezeichnet einen Zustand eingeschränkter Angepaßtheit an die physischen und psychischen Beanspruchungen des Lebens, der für den letzten Lebensabschnitt charakteristisch ist. Der Begriff „Alter” läßt sich streng genommen nur auf Menschen, auf ihnen nahestehende Primaten und auf soziale Organismen anwenden, bei denen es einen hinreichend langen Lebensabschnitt nach Einstellung der Zeugungsaktivitäten gibt. Das Alter beginnt also mit dem Erlöschen der Zeugungsfähigkeit und wird durch den Tod des Organismus abgeschlossen.
