Der Jenaer Philosoph und Physiker J.F. Fries, einer der wenigen Kantianer im Zeitalter der Romantik, schrieb 1818 in seinem Handbuch der psychischen Anthropologie:
„Für die Kenntnis der Natur ist der Mensch ein Zögling des Auges. Nur das Sehen führt uns über die Oberfläche der Erde hinaus zu den Gestirnen und auch auf der Erde führt dieser Sinn uns die meisten Anschauungen aus den größten Entfernungen mit der größten Leichtigkeit der Auffassung zu... Der Sehende faßt das ganze Leben der Natur um sich her durch Licht und Farbe, das Auge ist unser Weltsinn.“
