Zusammenfassung
Eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben des Blutes besteht darin, den in der Lunge aufgenommenen Sauerstoff zu den Organen und Geweben zu transportieren sowie das hier gebildete Kohlendioxid der Lunge zuzuführen. Diese Funktion wird im wesentlichen vom Hämoglobin erfüllt, das in den Erythrozyten enthalten ist. Außerdem sind das Hämoglobin und die übrigen Puffersysteme des Blutes an der Regulation des Säure-Basen-Haushalts beteiligt. Störungen des Atemgastransports und des Säure-Basen-Gleichgewichts führen nicht selten zu lebensbedrohlichen Situationen.Vor allem in der Intensivmedizin, aber auch in anderen klinischen Bereichen, werden alle Anstrengungen unternommen, solche Störungen durch therapeutische Maßnahmen zu beseitigen. Voraussetzung dafür ist jedoch die gründliche Kenntnis der theoretischen Grundlagen. Dieser Aspekt sollte Motivation genug dafür sein, sich mit den in diesem Kapitel behandelten Fragen intensiv zu beschäftigen.
