Zusammenfassung
Der pulmonale Gasaustausch benötigt eine periodische Belüftung der Lunge durch Bewegungen des Brustkorbs und Zwerchfells. Ursache ist eine rhythmische neuronale Aktivität, die im respiratorischen Netzwerk der Medulla oblongata entsteht. Dieser Atemrhythmus läuft selbständig (autonom) ab und stellt einen der stabilsten Rhythmen dar.Wegen seiner vitalen Bedeutung kann der Atemrhythmus willkürlich nur kurzfristig variiert werden (z. B. bei Phonation),jede längerfristige Veränderung führt zur dramatischen Störung der koordinierten „kardio-respiratorischen“ Funktionen [6] und letztlich der Energieversorgung des Organismus.
