Zusammenfassung
Die Entdeckung des Blutkreislaufs durch William Harvey gehört zu den wissenschaftlichen Großtaten des 17. Jahrhunderts. Harvey wurde 1578 in England geboren. Nach Studien in Cambridge und Padua erwarb er sich als Arzt in London Ruhm und Anerkennung.1628 veröffentlichte er sein bahnbrechendes Werk„Exercitatio anatomica de motu cordis et sanguinis“, in dem er die bis dahin gültige Anschauung widerlegte, daß das von der Leber gebildete Blut im Gewebe versickert und dort verbraucht wird. Harvey postulierte, daß das Blut auf einer geschlossenen Bahn durch den Körper bewegt wird. Er schrieb:,,Die Bewegung und der Schlag des Herzens sind hierfür die einzige Ursache“ und an anderer Stelle:,,Es sei gestattet, dies einen Kreislauf zu nennen.“
