Zusammenfassung
Ein wesentlicher Unterschied zwischen Mensch und Tier besteht in der Fähigkeit des Menschen, sich innerhalb von Gemeinschaften Kulturen zu schaffen. Eine wichtige Voraussetzung für diese Fähigkeit ist die Kooperation zwischen vielen Individuen, und diese setzt wiederum einen Gedankenaustausch, eine Kommunikation, voraus. Das wichtigste und primäre Kommunikationsmittel ist dabei die Sprache, die auf dem Sprechapparat und dem Gehör beruht. Alle anderen Mittel zwischenmenschlicher Verständigung sind von untergeordneter Bedeutung. Dies läßt sich aus einem grausamen Experiment schließen, das die Natur mit uns anstellt, indem sie gelegentlich gehörlose oder blinde Kinder auf die Welt kommen läßt. Dabei zeigt sich, daß die blinden, also normalhörenden Kinder, sich erstaunlich gut entwickeln und in ihrer Bildungsfähigkeit kaum eingeschränkt sind. Die gehörlosen Kinder hingegen bedürfen einer immensen Betreuung, damit sie eine Sprache erlernen und somit Bildungschancen erhalten. Ohne diese Betreuung würden sie auch heute noch das Schicksal erfahren, das unsere Vorfahren zur Prägung der verwandten Worte stumm — dumm veranlaßte.
