Abstract
Zones of concentrated deformation that we have recognized as chert-rich melange form one of the significant components of the accretionary prism in southwest Japan. Besides being zones of concentrated deformation, the chert-rich melanges contain a distinctive suite of lithologies that appear to record the initial stratigraphy of the subducting oceanic lithosphere. The distinctive structural and stratigraphic aspects of these units are discussed separately below and shown as examples in the photographs.
