Abstract

Dating from the time of Klinge’s work, fibrinoid has been generally regarded as the morphological stigma of rheumatic or other diseases which are considered to have an immunopathogenetic cause. This has inevitably led to many false conclusions as a morphological substrate was used to infer an immune pathogenesis. It was this climate of opinion which suggested that the collagen diseases (○Klemperer et al., 1942), if only on account of the occurrence of “ fibrinoid” should be regarded as diseases of the immune system. Yet ○Klinge (1933) had already clearly pointed out that fibrinoid changes of connective tissue could result from various types of injury.
