Zusammenfassung
SIDS und Apnoen im Säuglingsalter werden als nosologisch verwandt gesehen, seitdem Steinschneider 1972 die SIDS-Apnoe-Theorie aufstellte. In ihrer ursprünglichen Form eines einfachen Zusammenhangs zwischen Apnoe-neigung und SIDS-Risiko ist diese widerlegt. Die Mutter der von ihm untersuchten zwei Geschwister mit Apnoe-neigung und späterem plötzlichen ungeklärten Tod hat 20 Jahre später gestanden, ihre Kinder getötet zu haben. Die Pathophysiologie des SIDS-Todes ist weiterhin ungeklärt, wenngleich eine Reihe wichtiger Erkenntnisse gewonnen wurden. Die Ohnmacht gegenüber dem SIDS-Tod ist allerdings erstmalig einer begründeten Zuversicht hinsichtlich präventiver Maßnahmen gewichen, seitdem es in den letzten Jahren gelang, durch Vermeiden des Risikofaktors »Bauchlage« die SIDS-Raten in einer Reihe von Ländern um bis zu 70 % zu senken.
