Bakterielle Infektionskrankheiten des Neugeborenen lassen sich in Lokal- oder Organinfektionen, systemische Entzündungsreaktionen (SER) (Synonym „klinische Sepsis”, engl, „systemic inflammatory response syndrome” — SIRS) oder in eine Sepsis unterscheiden. Es gibt fließende übergänge.
