Zusammenfassung

Epidemiologie beschäftigt sich mit dem Auftreten und den Ursachen von Krankheiten in Bevölkerungen. Untersuchungen zu Ursachen von Krankheiten sind von unmittelbarer klinischer Relevanz, wenn sich hieraus Konzepte zur Prävention dieser Krankheiten ergeben. Fragen der Therapie gehören nicht zum klassischen Arbeitsfeld der Epidemiologie. Der Patient für den Epidemiologen ist bei der Analyse möglicher Krankheitsursachen nicht das Individuum, sondern die Population als Summe der Individuen. Während in der klinischen Pädiatrie die Frage: „Warum ist das Kind A an der Krankheit B erkrankt?“ von Bedeutung ist, steht in der Epidemiologie die Frage: „Warum ist die Krankheit B bei Kindern z.B. aus der Population X häufiger als bei Kindern aus der Population Y?“ im Zentrum des Interesses.
