Abstract
Diabetes is well recognized as a major global health problem. The clinical manifestation and progression of diabetes often vary considerably between countries and commonly between ethnic groups in the same country. Currently diabetes affects an estimate 15.1 million people in North America, 12.6 million in Latin America, 18.5 million in Europe, 6.6 million in the former USSR, 5.3 million in Africa, 51.4 million in Asia, and just under 1 million in Oceania (McCarty and Zimmet 1994).
