Zusammenfassung
“Objektorientierung“ ist gegenwärtig sicher eines der größten Schlagworte in der Informatik schlechthin. Und richtig verstanden, präsentiert und angewendet weisen die dahinter stehenden Konzepte wie Abstraktion und Autonomie, Taxonomie und Vererbung sowie Klassifikation ein ganz beachtliches Leistungspotential für den praktischen Einsatz auf.
Wurde Objektorientierung anfänglich vorwiegend im Kontext von Programmiersprachen betrachtet, so zeigte sich doch schnell, daß bei der Strukturierung, Verwaltung und Benutzung großer, komplex organisierter Datenbestände in Datenbanksystemen ebenfalls Gewinn aus diesem Ansatz gezogen werden könnte, zumal sich viele ehrgeizige Anwendungen in Bereichen wie CAD/CAM/CIM, Büroautomatisierung, Landinformationssysteme, Wissensrepräsentation, Software Engineering usw. von herkömmlichen Datenbanksystemen nicht gut versorgt sehen.
Objektorientierte Datenbanksysteme als Symbiose von objektorientierten Eigenschaften und traditionellen Datenbankkonzepten (dauerhafte Verwaltung großer, integrierter Datenbestände, Mehrfachbenutzbarkeit, Konsistenz und Verlustsicherung, Datenunabhängigkeit, Verteilung, ad hoc-Anfragemöglichkeiten, ...) sind daher heute sowohl Gegenstand intensiver Forschung als auch bereits neue Mitbewerber auf dem Markt, wo sie auf die Konkurrenz aus der relationalen Welt treffen.
Dieser Aufsatz erläutert die wichtigsten Eigenschaften objektorientierter Datenbanksysteme und gibt eine Einschätzung ihrer aktuellen und künftigen Bedeutung.
