Abstract

The relative performance and potential of statistical turbulence models and large-eddy simulations for calculating turbulent flows of practical interest is examined by considering the quality of the results and the computer resources required. For a variety of flows, including square-duct flow, 2D flows with separation, flows past bluff bodies and in a stirred tank reactor, the results of calculations obtained with the two methods are compared with each other and with available experimental data. The computing times are also compared. The suitability of the two methods for engineering applications is discussed for various types of flow phenomena
