Zusammenfassung
Die Chemotherapie beschäftigt sich mit der Bekämpfung von Infektionskrankheiten, deren Erreger (Bakterien, Viren, Pilze, Würmer und Protozoen) ursächlich für das Krankheitsbild sind. Das Ziel bei der Behandlung dieser Krankheiten ist die selektive Beseitigung der Erreger, ohne gleichzeitige Nebenwirkungen am Patienten zu verursachen. Bei der Herkunft dieser Verbindungen kann es sich sowohl um synthetische (Chemotherapeutika) als auch um isolierte Naturstoffe aus Mikroorganismen, höheren Pflanzen und Tieren (Antibiotika) handeln. Die Differenzierung zwischen synthetischen Chemotherapeutika und Antibiotika ist fließend. Oft gelingt es, durch chemische Modifizierung die therapeutische Breite (geringere Toxizität bei besserer Wirksamkeit) eines Antibiotikums deutlich zu erhöhen. Der umgekehrte Fall ist natürlich auch denkbar: eine synthetische Vorstufe wird durch Biotransformation in das eigentliche Antibiotikum umgewandelt. Dieses Kapitel soll sich mit Antibiotika befassen, die bisher nicht bei den entsprechenden Stoffklassen in diesem Lehrbuch Erwähnung finden (s. auch Kap. 1.4., 4.2.3., 5.2.2., 6.1.2.). Obwohl die hier behandelten Antibiotika keine einheitliche Stoffklasse darstellen, können sie doch nach ihrer Biosynthese als Polyketide bezeichnet werden.
