Intraspecific Genetic Variation in Ectomycorrhizal Fungi

  • Chapter
Mycorrhiza

Abstract

Genetic variation amongst mycorrhizal fungi is of considerable importance in ecology, agriculture and forestry, since physiological differences between and within species of fungal symbionts could greatly affect the dynamics of the establishment and the functioning of the symbiotic association. This was highlighted by Harley and Smith (1983) who wrote: “At the moment we know too little of the genetic variation and variability of mycorrhizal fungi, and almost nothing of their breeding systems and genetics. There are those who believe that there is minimal gene flow within the species of most mycorrhizal fungi because sexual pairing, nuclear fusion and reduction appear to be rare. On the other hand, many of the fungi, those of ectomycorrhiza in particular, are clearly very variable physiologically in many ways. If their breeding systems were like those of other related fungi, the production and selection of new strains would be possible”. To clarify some of the problems underlined by Harley and Smith, over the last 5 years, there has been a significant increase in the study of the genetic variation among mycorrhizal fungi, especially at the infraspecific level. Studies have focused on some model species of ectomycorrhizal basidiomycetes which can be grown in vitro and for which the main stages and events of their life cycles are known and/or more or less controlled.
