Abstract
The history of lasers dates as far back as 1917 when Albert Einstein showed that the probability of a transition in a two-level system is characterized by the sum of two terms, one of which corresponds to spontaneous and the other to induced transitions. Almost a quarter of a century later in 1939, Fabrikant suggested for the first time the possi bility of creating an inverted popul ati on of levels in an optical medium in spite of the Boltzmann di stri bution law so that the particle population N2 of the upper (second) level exceeds the population N1 of the lower energy level.
