Moleküle kann man nur in günstigen Fällen und erst seit kurzem mit speziellen Mikroskopen direkt abbilden. Zur Bestimmung von Größe, Masse und Form von Molekülen gibt es jedoch viele weniger direkte, einfache und ältere Wege, auch aus dem Bereich der klassischen Physik. Dies ist Gegenstand der folgenden Abschnitte.
