Vibrational Spectroscopy

Abstract

In contrast to atoms, molecules have internal degrees of freedom: their vibrational states can be excited, for example. The spectroscopy of these vibrations yields information on the structure and the bonding of the molecules. Here, as for molecular rotations, the fundamentals are best studied in diatomic molecules; this includes the coupling between vibrations and rotations (Sects. 10.1–10.4). Following an overview of the extensive field of vibrations of larger molecules in Sect. 10.5, we treat applications of molecular vibrations to radiation sources and lasers in Sects. 10.6–10.8.
